The UK Telegraph reports that, according to a group of medical ethicists linked to Oxford University, “Parents should be allowed to have their newborn babies killed because they are ‘morally irrelevant’ and ending their lives is no different to abortion.”

The above conclusion was based on an article, published in the Journal of Medical Ethics, which postulates that newborn babies are not “actual persons” and do not have a “moral right to life.” The article, entitled After-birth abortion: Why should the baby live? was written by two of the journal editor’s former associates, Alberto Giubilini and Francesca Minerva.

The journal’s editor, Prof Julian Savulescu, director of the Oxford Uehiro Centre for Practical Ethics, said the article’s authors had received death threats since publishing the article. He said those who made abusive and threatening posts about the study were “fanatics opposed to the very values of a liberal society.” …

Defending the decision to publish in a British Medical Journal blog, Prof Savulescu, said that arguments in favour of killing newborns were “largely not new.” What Minerva and Giubilini did was apply these arguments “in consideration of maternal and family interests.”

Application:

What begins with a concern for birth control eventually leads to things like late term abortion, the “morning after pill” and now to the moral irrelevance of newborn babies and “after-birth abortion.” Small compromises eventually become big ones. It’s the principle of the moral slide and it’s happening in every corner of our modern society. Without a standard of right or wrong, modern man lacks any mechanism to slow such moral and ethical decline, leaving it instead to the coming judgment of God.

“I prayed, “O my God, I am utterly ashamed; I blush to lift up my face to you. For our sins are piled higher than our heads, and our guilt has reached to the heavens” (Ezra 9:6, NLT).
